Marriage Equality: Overview
Why Marriage Equality Matters
Marriage matters, not because every LGBT couple wants to get married, not because every LGBT couple should get married, but because every LGBT couple should have the option to get married – just like everyone else. It matters because marriage is a fundamental right, whether or not we individually choose to participate.
It matters because equality is our birthright. This country is founded on the concept of equality; it is enshrined in the Declaration of Independence. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” And without the option of legally marrying and protecting our families – just like everyone else – we are not equal and can never be equal. Second-class status means second class citizens.
